Formatting large external HD may
I had trouble formatting for my mac too, getting error messages etc, but after some internet searching found it is possible and quite simple. In disk utility go to partition instead of erase, formatting using erase doesn't seem to work. Under volume scheme select how many partitions you want, select GUID for the format and Mac OS extended (journaled) and you are good to go.
